A
promotional package for Head & Shoulders shampoo has won a gold
award in the 2002 edition of the Paperboard Packaging Council’s
national paperboard packaging competition.
Called “Hair Helmet,” the folding carton is made of 18-point SBS
board. It is sheet-fed offset printed in six colors with an
aqueous coating. “This coating protects the mailer against
scratching or scuffing and gives it a sheen,” says Sean Garry,
National Accounts Manager for Neff Packaging Solutions.
The Cincinnati-based company produced the unique folding
cartons. Barefoot Advertising, Cincinnati, designed the package.
The book-style, auto-bottom carton bears images of hair on its
exterior. When the carton is in its open position, the four
flaps and base form a faux hairpiece.
Two flaps create sideburns for each side of the head. They also
join together in and “Arthur” lock to hold the shampoo sample in
place.
Another flap forms wavy bangs that cover the forehead. The
largest flap covers the back of the head.
The flap’s interior contains the promotional message. It says:
“Use this bottle (Head & Shoulders Shampoo) or use this box.”
Icons show how to unfold the box and place it over your head.
The promotional package targets high school teenage boys. Its
construction and graphics use humor to get across its message:
Head & Shoulders sure beats wearing a box on your head.
